Lead Institute has continued to distinguish itself as the undisputed leader in the CXC’s Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examinations (CAPE)-based education in Dominica. For the past five years, the Institute has produced the island’s top performers at the CAPE exams.
This year was no exception. Seventeen-year-old Accounting Major, Kaihil Charles, was Dominica’s Top Performer at the May/June 2016 exams. Charles obtained four grade ones and one grade two in the five courses taken at the exams. The Lead Institute first-year student, who was a top performer in the CSEC, secured grade ones in Accounts Unit 1, Management Unit 1, Entrepreneurship Unit 1, and Integrated Math and a grade two in Communications studies. Charles, who was not surprised at the results, said he “did feel relieved”, and attributed his success to hard work and support of family. “[My] sense of relief came from knowing that my hard work was not in vain, and I continue to thank Jehovah for blessing my efforts,” he said.
Another Lead Institute student, Iyka Dorival, posted Dominica’s second-highest performance at the 2016 CAPE Examinations. She secured three grade ones and one grade three in the four CAPE Units taken in the exams. The first-year Law Major was awarded grade ones in Caribbean Studies, Law Unit 1, Communication Studies, and a grade three in Literature Unit 1. Dorival accredited her outstanding performance to “hard work, consistency and my dedication and love for learning”. Quite apart from the outstanding performances of several of its students, Lead Institute attained an overall pass rate of 79.33 % in the 2016 exams, performing well above the regional average in several of the subjects examined.
The Institute attained 100% pass rates in several courses including Management, Entrepreneurship, Tourism. Director of Lead Institute, David Vital, credits their success at CAPE to both student initiative and the commitment of its tutors and staff to their success.
“That kind of success happens on purpose. Most of the students who enroll at Lead Institute come with a mindset to work. We are simply the match that ignites their flame. We do not yet have state-of-the-art facilities, but we have a great quality programme. And we have great tutors and staff that are completely sold-out to student success” he said.
