Hundreds Attend MWSU’s Orientation

More than 200 individuals attended the Midwestern State University’s (MWSU) Caribbean General Orientation and Recruitment Programme which was hosted by Lead Institute at the Public Service Training Center in Roseau on June 19. Among those in attendance were students from the Dominica State College, Lead Institute, recent high graduates from secondary schools across the island and a wide cross-section of the society.

The Orientation, which is held annually, is designed to provide prospective students with first-hand information on a number of pertinent issues including the University’s Caribbean Recruitment Programme, admissions and scholarship application process and a general overview of college life. Students are also provided with the opportunity to seek clarification on any issues they may have about studying in the US.

Dr. Randy Glean, Director of International Student Services at MWSU, Dora Robin, Administrative Officer -Human Resource Development in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, as well as David Vital, Director of Lead Institute and Local Coordinator for the MWSU’s Caribbean Recruitment Programme, addressed the students.

Under its Caribbean Recruitment Scholarship Programme, MWSU grants successful candidates competitive waiver scholarships to pursue undergraduate studies at the university which results in significant cost savings to the student. ”My purpose for being here is not to extract tuition from you” Dr. Glean assured students. “You will be paying less than the economic rate, less than the Texans are paying”.

To qualify for the scholarships students are required to have a minimum of two CAPE subjects or A’ levels, an Associate Degree or other post-secondary qualification. To date, more than 350 Dominicans and 1,100 students from the Eastern Caribbean have graduated from the MWSU. An additional eight new students have been granted scholarships to attend the University this Fall and are due to leave Dominica for the US sometime in August.

MWSU offers the competitive waiver scholarships to students during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Any person wishing to apply for a scholarship under the programme may do so by requesting an application form from Lead Institute
